Home Design Sense – Bathroom Ideas

Published: Mar 10th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Your bathroom is used every single day. Because of that it really should look as good as it possibly can. People, however, often neglect the bathroom because it's a functional room tucked away in the corner of most homes. Even your bathroom deserves to be decorated so why not spruce up your bathroom with some of these ideas?

When designing or decorating a bathroom keep it simple.

Hardware choices should be the primary concern when designing a bathroom. Faucets, tubs and toilets are produced in a variety of shapes and materials can centerpiece a design. Open showers are currently popular and claw-foot bathtubs are almost always considered to be classic and attractive. Evaluate your privacy issues and don't put the toilet and tub too close together unless they are separated by a solid (non-glass) wall.

Can you theme decorate a bathroom? Of course. Look through magazines and books at your library to get inspiration and ideas. Keep in mind that “less is more” while choosing a decoration pattern that will coordinate with the rest of the home.

You can find color schemes in artwork that you will want to display. Look at the colors in the artwork and choose the ones that appeal to you. Then go to your home store and look at the color swatches. Take them home to see the color in the existing light in your bathroom before purchasing the paint.

Shop around when looking for tile. There are many to choose from, so take your time. You should visit several tile shops and learn as much as possible about the tile. Take notes. Compare your notes and you will be able to make a knowledgeable decision about which tile will work best for your specific needs.

After the design and production of a space-conscious and attractive bathroom have been completed, focus on the accessories to bring out your personality and theme.

bathrooms use a lot of water so beach and ocean themes are often popular for these rooms. Beach themes can be a whole lot of fun. You could start by painting the room peach or bright blue and then add several sea shells or similar accessories. Any furniture in the bathroom should be wicker or whitewashed wooden pieces to add to the natural “driftwood” feeling. Any ocean theme will require the use of pale green or blue paint colors to properly convey the feeling of the sea. Again whitewashed or dark wood grained furnishings really complement this style of room.

If neither ocean nor beach themes feel right to you then you could consider a tropical decorating style for your bathroom. Tan and jungle green are great choices for this particular theme. A few touches of red can really add some spark to the room afterwards. Rattan furniture always looks great in tropical style bathrooms and a sisal rug is also the perfect replacement for the traditional bathroom rug.

What about an Italian style bathroom? This particular theme is rich and luxurious and perfect for bathrooms with a spa or soaking tub. Most Italian themes also use mosaics, which look great in any shower. If designing an Italian style bathroom then use gold, deep blue or red colors in your paint scheme for maximum effect.

Last but not least is the country decorating theme. This is a nice relaxed theme. Strong country colors are red, green, blue, yellow or tan. You can dress up your bathroom with French accessories or dress it down with some rustic elements. Pine furniture works best with this particular style.

Once you see the completed bathroom you won't believe it took you so long to decide to redecorate the room. After all, most people start their day in the bathroom, so why not start off right.

Salt Chlorinator: It’s Still Chlorine, But an Easier & Much Smarter Way of Dosing

Salt Chlorinator: It’s Still Chlorine, But an Easier & Much Smarter Way of Dosing

By: Aiden Thomas

You have to be concerned of all your pool equipments including pool filters, grids, salt chlorinators, pool pumps, cartridges, motors, heaters, timers, freeze guards, lights, valves, pool covers etc to maintain your pool equipment. You should make spotless your salt chlorinator cell electrodes on usual basis to exploit chorine production and should unsoiled leaf baskets regularly. To guarantee maximum water turnover rate, you should backwash your filters.

Salt Chlorinators use small amount of natural salt (Sodium Chloride) is dissolved into the water (becoming about half as salty as a human teardrop). The system’s electrolytic cell is plumbed directly in-line with the pool equipment. The power control unit is wired to the pool timer so it purifies the water when the pump is running.

The electrolysis process is achieved by passing the salt water solution through an electrolytic cell which converts salt (sodium chloride) in the water into (100% pure) chlorine gas which, when dissolved in water becomes sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine). So you are in fact producing your own chlorine to sanities the pool.

The Cell

The cell usually consists of a clear plastic housing containing the electrodes, made up of an anode (negative), and a cathode (positive). The electrodes are made from or coated with exotic metals like platinum and aridium. The better chlorinators available boast extremely durable coatings such as titanium.

Manual or Self Cleaning Cell?

As chlorine is produced through the process of electrolysis, calcium deposits on the surface of the electrodes. Unattended, calcium will quickly build up to the point where it bridges the gap between positive and negative electrodes. If this happens, irreparable damage will be caused to the electrodes (generally the most expensive part of a salt chlorinator).

Consequently, it’s extremely important that the electrodes be cleaned every few weeks. With manually cleaned units, this involves removing the electrodes, preparing a light solution of pool acid, and bathing the electrodes until they are visibly clean. In practice very few pool owners are vigilant enough regarding this maintenance, sooner or later letting the cell go for months without checking or cleaning.

More advanced self-cleaning units boast sophisticated circuitry that periodically reverses the polarity of the electrodes. This almost eliminates calcium build-up, making the cleaning process described above redundant. Unless you plan to be fastidious in your checking and cleaning of the cell, self cleaning chlorinators are highly recommended. You end up working much less and are likely to enjoy extra years of trouble free (and economic) service from your chlorinator.

Controls

Some units come with time clocks and in-built facilities for pool lights, and other more sophisticated options. Control options that most pool owners find extremely helpful include:

• Auto-Super chlorination – Highly Recommended – which automatically boots the level of chlorine in the pool (for example, once a week) – required to break down organic compounds that build up in the pool water.

• Chlorine Output Control – All pools experience periods of heavy use (e.g. summer weekends) so the ability to quickly boost chlorine output is very helpful.

• Add Salt Indicators – salt is gradually lost from the pool water – and the chlorinator will only function properly while there is adequate salt.

• Automatic timer controls – will ideally allow you to set a 7 day cycle.

• Battery back-up – should there be a power failure, this will retain timer and output settings – important if you plan to be away for periods of time.

Selecting a Suitable Unit

A number of factors will affect the selection of a salt chlorinator.

• Size of the pool or spa – larger pools needs larger chlorinators.

• Bathing load – heavy loads consume more chlorine.

• Size of the filtration system – poor water flow will require longer running time.

• Summer water temperature – high temperature and strong sunlight cause faster loss of available chlorine.

Other Chemical Requirements

The requirements for chemical balance are the same for electrolytic chlorination, as for traditionally chlorinated pools. Total Alkalinity, pH, Calcium Hardness and chlorine levels should be checked regularly. Chlorine stabilizer should be added to the pool and maintained at approx 30-50ppm, to reduce chlorine loss due to UV rays.

You should keep checking pool waters on every other day. You can make use of DPD kits or test strips to check chlorine, pH and total alkalinity levels. Add chemicals if required. You should give shock treatments and add algaecides once a week.

Potty Training: The Transition to Being a Big Boy/Big Girl

Published: Mar 8th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Each child is unique when it comes to potty training, and determining if it is time for your little guy or gal to give up the diapers and start using the potty is challenging. Be forewarned, however; potty training (even though many parents claim it is easy) can become a huge undertaking. And don't plan on junior giving up his Pampers cold turkey. Potty training takes time and patience.

No More Diapers!

Toddlers are an extremely stubborn lot, and this spills over to their toileting habits. There is no cure-all technique or fix-all method for potty training, but it is a mix of trial and error and elbow grease. Moving the child out of diapers is best accomplished when there is tangible motivation and rewards involved. Your reward will be not buying any more expensive diapers and not having to pull diaper duty.

When you get ready to begin potty training, make sure you and the child are ready because there really is no turning back. There is no specific age to begin toilet training, but anytime after 18 months is good. You will know when the time is right for your child; some parents start their child off on potty training even earlier than 18 months, while some may wait until the child is two years old or even three years old.

Training Pants & Potty Chairs

Once you have made the determination that your child is ready to give up his baby diaper for big boy pants, find some underwear style training pants for him to wear – either the disposable kind like "Pull-ups" or the reusable/washable variety.

You might even consider allowing the child to be present when you purchase the training pants and allow them to choose which they like best. Splurging a little bit on the purchase of some underwear that is emblazoned with the child's favorite cartoon character is also a good idea; this adds more interest to the item from the child's perspective. When you buy the training pants, don't look back. Get rid of all the diapers in your home and make sure that the child sees you throw them in the trash.

Reverting back to diapers will only delay the potty training process and may reinforce any apprehension the child has with wearing training pants. You will also want to purchase a child size potty chair, or a special seat that fits on top of your toilet.

Getting Started

Once you have begun to put training pants on your child, it is important that you ask the child often throughout the day if he needs to go to the potty. Expect the child to forget the fact that you're trying to potty train him; he needs to be prompted for the first few weeks (or months in some children) to go to the potty. He may not actually go each time, but when he does, be sure to pile on the praise and let him know what a "big boy" he is becoming.

The goal at the end of the process is to have the child be able to potty independently without your assistance or prompting, but that can be a long road and patience will be needed to achieve it. On average, it takes around eight months to fully potty train a child – and some may need a full year to achieve independent toileting patterns.

Tips to Remember

The following tips will help you as you work with your child to develop appropriate toileting skills:

Let the child feel as in control of the process as possible; this means not dressing them in clothing that is difficult to get off or that has multiple buttons and snaps. Elasticized pants that are easy to pull up and down are ideal.

Place the potty chair next to the toilet, and have a potty chair for each bathroom in the home that the child might use.

Consider a potty chair that changes colors in the bottom when the child urinates; kids love to see that happen and will sometimes go to the potty just for that reason.

Purchase some children's books on potty training and read them to your child to reinforce the skills you are working on together.

Create a reward chart and give the child a special sticker to place on the chart when he uses the potty; place the chart down low on the refrigerator so that he can get to it easily.

Never scold the child when he has an accident; potty training has a learning curve and he will eventually get it right!

Painting and Decorating

Painting and Decorating

By: Joanna Harris

Who doesn’t like a house which is well painted from the inside as well as from the outside and is decorated with taste? Even though it may sound like a tedious job, requiring a lot of work and expertise, doing up a room is a very easy job if done systematically. And instead of doing the whole house at once, doing it room by room would go a long way in ensuring that things don’t go out of hand.

Before starting the job, a careful planning has to be done. There are various factors to be considered like:

How and where to relocate the furniture and other items of the room: if the rooms are being done one at a time, the furniture can be shifted to another room for a few days, if you don’t have a luxury of a garage. It is better to remove everything and then start painting as there are bound to be some splashes of colour here or there even though all precautions are taken. Else the furniture could be covered with newspapers or cloth to prevent them from getting coloured.

Colours to be used: It should go with the general ambience of the room, match with the upholstery, furniture, electrical fixtures etc. If being used for a child’s nursery, the colours used should be bright and lively. You may also plan to paint some cartoon characters on the walls. The ceilings may also have some animation for the kids, which glows at night. But all this requires some time and effort, going to the local hardware store and finding out about the brands of colours available, matching colour swathes, the procedures to be used for painting, the technical details and the equipment to be used.

Cleaning up afterwards: once the painting is done, the floors need to be scrubbed to remove the unwanted splashes of paint that may have fallen. A proper solvent should be used for this purpose else it may spoil the texture of the floor.

Once the painting is done and the furniture is shifted back, the decorating of the room should be started, so that you have a general idea of what goes where. The decoration of the room will depend largely on the purpose the room serves.

If the room is to be used as a nursery for a newborn, the colours should not be too bright. In case of a room for older kids or teenagers, the decoration should be such that they feel at home in their rooms. Maps, quotes and other such things can be put up on the walls for easy reference and to make the room more colourful.

The living room is a place where guests are entertained. Artefacts and mementoes, other collectors’ items from around the world should be displayed here, either on the walls or in a display shelf.

Bedrooms should be decorated with personal items such as photographs or memorabilia.

The garden should not be ignored while decorating the house as the house should look inviting from the outside too. The first impression is formed from the outside. So the exteriors of the house should be well painted and the garden well maintained.

And then you can pride yourself in the compliments your house gets.

Amazing Ways – Using Isopropyl Alcohol For Bed Bugs

Amazing Ways – Using Isopropyl Alcohol For Bed Bugs

By: Nathan Shepard

Of all the beasties i have had to cope with, Bedbugs have got to be the most sickening. I hate the little blighters! There are several species of Bedbug but this article will deal with the Common Bedbug ( Cimex lectularius ), as it’s the most plentiful, being found in most temperate climates around the world.

The Common Bedbug feeds off human blood and doesn’t discriminate between blood groups. The adult has a flat reddish-brown oval body and measures roughly 4-5mm in length. During feeding, their abdomen fills up with blood and expands leaving the bug resembling an apple seed with legs.

Bedbugs are even less widespread than they used to be but have been making a little bit of a comeback recently. While big infestations may still happen, it is more customary to cope with infestations of tiny numbers of bugs. Bedbugs can enter the home via used beds, sofas and curtains and can even be transferred in luggage after visiting hotels, guesthouses, and so on.

A revealing Bedbug bite is a string of bites close together and blood spots on the bed sheet. The Bedbug doesn’t actually bite, as it doesn’t posses biting mouthparts, more exactly it uses two hollow tubes and injects its victim with an analgesic and an anticoagulant. This means that the victim is unaware of the bite until sometime later with the onset of serious itchiness. Bites frequently happen in a small row. Some will suffer from a hard sore, white in colour with a reddish swelling and secondary infection is always a risk with folks scratching the itch. Revealing signs of Bedbug activity are tiny spots of blood on your sheets.

In contrast to popular misconception, the cleanliness of your house has no impact on whether or not you are in peril from a Bedbug infestation. Should Bedbugs find their way into your residence, they will look for shelter often in the stitching of mattresses, settees and curtains. Openings behind wallpaper and skirting boards could also harbor bugs. Regular vacuuming of these locations can remove the tiny suckers. An inexpensive anti-bug barrier can be built by wrapping double-sided sticky tape around each leg of the bed.

Remove all bedding and clean up it by washing on a hot wash ( fifty Centigrade or 120 Fahrenheit ). You can deal with the mattress with a portable steam cleaner that are to be had from many retailers. If you have got a divan bed, be certain to go over the base completely with the steamer. A stiff brush is handy for dislodging any eggs and shed skins from seams. If you can dismantle your bed frame, do so, as this can show up any hiding bugs. So use this as an excuse to carry out a severe spring-cleaning of your room. Seal any cracks and holes in the fabric of the room with an acceptable sealant – a caulking gun and silicon gel is good for this reason.

So what about the pros ‘ should you just take the simple route and pay for them to solve your problem? Well if you do, they will come along and tell you to strip the bed so they can start using isopropyl alcohol for bed bugs to the mattress and bed frame / divan base. If they’re intensive and know their business, they should also look for possible harbourage across the room and treat these areas too. You are still going to need to deal with sanitizing your bedding, so you must weigh up whether you would like to pay for the spray or the cost of a steam cleaner.

Scaffolding

Scaffolding

By: Joanna Harris

Scaffolding is a support structure, fabricated by using metal pipes or frames, to assist the construction work of high-rise building. These structures are of temporary nature and are used by construction workers and technicians for accessing various portions of the building situated at a height. These can be erected inside or outside the building to carry the construction material.

They also provide string support base for the workers so that they can work at height. The scaffolds are available in prefabricated portions as well. These prefabricated metal frame portions can be easily transported and welded at the building site as per the requirement. The scaffolding should be prepared as per the regulations governing them. The inspection of the erected scaffold structure is the most important of all the phases. A properly inspected and approved erection will ensure the necessary support strength and durability. These are useful even in case of minor ceiling repairs. These are reusable structure and hence can be disassembled after the completion of works and re erected at another location provided there is no damage.

Scaffolds are available in variety of materials, shapes, locking arrangements, sizes, and mounting details. In case, you find it tedious to select the support structure for your work, the services for specialized scaffolding professions can be hired. These experts will carry out the site survey, suggest you the material and also take care of regulatory provisions.

The safety of workers performing tasks at high levels above the ground is also to be ensured when you erect support frames. The scaffoldings come with requisite belts, ropes and other accessories enabling fastening. The training of the workers who execute works using scaffolding is also a very important feature in order to to reduce the risk factor and ensure their safety. The regular monitoring and routine check of these frames cannot be neglected.

The cost factor of scaffolding depends upon factors such as covered area, material, platforms and time. The structures are available on rent also. Normally, the building contractors have their own arrangements for scaffolding and the cost is inbuilt in the construction cost. The contractors have also trained manpower to assemble and disassemble the scaffolding.

Why You Should Create a Beautiful Outdoor Oasis

By: Alton J. Andres

Like most of us, you love the great outdoors and the peace and tranquility in which it offers .We all look forward at one time or another to relieving our day to day stress by relaxing and unwinding at our favourite natural outdoor Oasis. A sanctuary where we can dwell in the songs and serenity of Mother Nature. Many home owners are now including rock gardens, waterfalls, and ponds in their landscaping plans to further enjoy Mother Nature’s full benefits in their own backyard.

Just imagine your very own backyard Oasis… a place where you and your family can relax and unwind while enjoying all the wonderful wildlife and plant life in your own backyard habitat. Your family, friends, and your neighbours will be envious of the beautiful ambiance surrounding your home. Everyone will absolutely love it. Imagine a wayward trip that once took precious time out of your day to that Natural Outdoor Oasis… is now merely a few feet away from your own back door!

Depending on your geographical location, your backyard Oasis will surely attract numerous varieties of birds, small animals, and even certain insects, all of which are attracted to your water source. A good idea would be for you to obtain some books with photographs showing all the different types of birds, small animals, and insects that thrive in your area, which could and most likely will pay your backyard Oasis a temporary…. if not permanent visit. I personally enjoy sitting out on my backyard deck, coffee in hand, listening to the sound of running water, and watching my prized Koi and Gold fish perform their little tricks and stunts and the birds and wildlife bathing and drinking out of my pond. It’s just such a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Once you decide to go ahead and build your backyard Oasis and pond, make sure that wherever you place your pond there is adequate access to an electrical source which will be required to run your ponds pumps, filters, and any other electrical pond accessories you may need or desire. I installed and cemented in next to my pond a 4 x 4 wooden post with an outdoor electrical box which allowed me to plug-in all of my pond equipment, reducing the hazardous task of having to run outdoor extension cords above ground. The best location for your pond would be a place that is clean and free from any debris or waste material that would likely enter the pond and harming or even killing your fish. Choosing a shady area will help moderate water temperatures and provide some cover for your fish. You can design your pond using a pre-formed unit, cement, or rubber lining, and filtration system of you’re choosing.

Speaking of fish, you may want to add some to your backyard pond and if so, I would suggest that you check with your local pet store in your area to see what types of fish are suitable for your pond, and the caring and maintenance of same. In my case I discovered that a mix of Koi and Gold fish thrived very well in my pond, and soon became very friendly pets. There are a wide variety of colors and types in which you can select. Be aware though….the addition of any fish to your pond can and most likely will attract certain types of predators.

There is nothing worse than caring for and raising your prized Koi and Gold fish only to lose them to a predator like the famous “Blue Heron” whom in my neck of the woods thrives on feeding on outdoor pond fish. It’s a good idea to have fish that are a little less colourful and camouflaged, which will increase their survival rate, however there is no guarantee… so what I did was purchase a net from my local pet supply store and whenever I was away for any length of time, I covered my pond with the netting and protected my prized fish from predators. Believe it or not, I even once had a “Cat” reach into the pond for a fish….falling in and having a heck of a time getting back out. Funny thing is I never ever saw that cat back in my little Oasis again.

A few things you should take note of here when it comes to adding fish to your pond. Generally and within reason, Koi and Gold fish will grow in size to that of their environment. This simply means that the larger your pond, the larger they will grow depending again on the number of fish you plan on raising. My pond was approximately 6’ wide X 12’ long, and 36” deep and held approximately 1200 gallons of water. During the winter months with this depth and the fact that I kept my pond pump circulating under water, I prevented my pond from freezing over. I also installed a small pond heater for these cold months, and my fish survived the winter just fine. I had a total of six fish with each ranging in size from 10” to 15” in length.

I invite you to visit my website for more information on the creation of rock gardens and ponds as well as numerous tips on the type of plants, pumps, design idea’s, and how to create waterfalls in your backyard pond.

Your imagination is the limit when it comes to creating the perfect rock garden, ponds, and waterfalls, that will provide an incredible habitat for your backyard, as well as increase your properties overall value. However please keep in mind that it’s always a good idea to check with your local municipal office to see if any deed restrictions are in place in your area which may prevent you from building or having a pond in your backyard. There are numerous resources offering different types and sizes of pre-formed ponds in which you can choose from, available both online and offline.

Tips For Effective Wallpaper Removal

Published: Mar 5th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

When the time comes to strip off the old wallpaper and put on new wallpaper or repaint walls or otherwise cover them, knowing a few tips for effective wallpaper removal can come in handy. It is usually the case that most wallpaper removal jobs come up whenever a room or a home is being remodeled. When it's done properly, it can be fairly easy but getting wallpaper off the wall can sometimes be difficult.

This is because the wallpaper itself may not be that difficult to remove but because it has been placed onto a wall that was improperly or never primed and sealed correctly the glue backing that holds the wallpaper to the wall may be really stuck to that surface. Wallpaper itself, at least the modern varieties, consists of two parts; a vinyl covering and a glue or paper backing.

Before getting started, it is a good idea to test a small area of the wallpaper to see if it peels away easily enough. If it comes right off and leaves only the glue backing on the wall the chances are high that the job will be fairly straightforward and easy to accomplish. There are older styles of wallpaper, though, that can be quite a bit different. There is a different technique for this kind.

For strippable wallpaper, a number of tools and a wallpaper removal solution will be required in order to clean off any glue or glued on paper backing that will be left on the wall after the wallpaper covering has been stripped off. Generally, all that's required will be a sponge, hot water and a putty knife or painting spatula 6 inches in width. If needed, soften the glue with the hot water and sponge.

Once that's been accomplished, begin scraping the remaining paper off with the painting spatula, taking care to remove as much of the glue residue remaining on the wall as possible. Next, rinse or wipe down the wall with a neutralizing solution such as water and white vinegar mixed in a solution of 1 gallon of water to 1 cup of vinegar. This is usually the only thing that'll need to be done.

If you have wallpaper that isn't of the strippable variety or is much older, you'll need to do a few other things in order to get the wallpaper off the wall. The best thing to do is to go to a home improvement store and purchase a commercial wallpaper removal solution and then modify it slightly by adding some fabric softener and a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to the mix.

Take a quarter cup of fabric softener and 2 tablespoons of baking soda and add them, along with a bottle of wallpaper removal solution to 3 gallons of hot water. Make sure the removal solution is composed of reactive enzymes. Generally, the same tools plus a paint roller or garden sprayer will be needed. Use a perforation tool to break up the wallpaper so that you can begin peeling it off.

Cover the wall with the solution making sure that it is thoroughly soaked, starting at the bottom and working your way up. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then begin scraping it off with the painting spatula. After that, use the same neutralizing solution to get up any remaining glue. Let the walls dry at least overnight. Remember to be methodical and thorough and everything should go well.
