Replacing Sliding Doors With French Doors

Category : Home Management

Typically leading out to the patio or backyard, sliding doors or French doors allow plenty of sunlight in while giving you a private view and access to the outdoors. Sliding glass doors are simply designed and perform the basic functions but may be seen as outdated and commonplace. A pair of French doors opens fully to the outdoors and adds charm and elegance to a space. Follow these steps to replace your sliding doors with French doors.

1. Take measurements of your old doors and purchase your French doors.

It is a good idea to purchase your French doors before you begin any work to remove your existing doors, since you may have to wait a couple of weeks or longer for the new doors to arrive. In order to purchase the right size of replacement doors, you will need to measure the height and width of your existing sliding doors. French doors come in standard sizes, so if you take your measurements to any reputable lumber yard or home improvement store, they should be able to order the correct size of a set of pre-hung French doors. If in doubt, you may remove the trim from the outside to obtain the measurements for the rough door opening, without removing the old door. It is best to choose a door with dimensions a quarter inch smaller on each side than the rough opening.

2. Detach your old sliding doors.

Once your new doors have arrived, you can get to work replacing your doors. Pry the existing trim and moldings loose with a hammer. The track and the rest of the sliding door unit will be exposed. Unscrew the nails on the side jambs, the top header, and the bottom track that secure the door panels in place. Pull the fixed panel away from the track and remove, followed by the sliding panel. You may need to pry the fixed door panel out of the side jamb if it is stuck.

3. Remove the rest of the sliding door unit.

Unscrew all the nails holding the jambs, header, and track in place. The unit should easily come loose. The side jambs tend to require more work to remove, and you need to be careful not to damage the wall surrounding the door frame. Starting at the bottom, pry the metal jamb away from the side wall.

4. Place the French doors in the opening and assess the fit.

Do not remove any clips or straps that hold your new doors aligned and closed. Center the door unit in the opening and position it into place. Using a level, assess if the door unit is even and plumb. You may need to get a friend to help you hold the door in place while you use shims to adjust the fit of the door. Start with the top and bottom corners and then behind the hinges, making sure to assess for levelness after each shim.

5. Secure the new doors into place.

Attach the frame of the unit to the opening using three nails for each jamb. Nail any shims into the jambs or the frame. Secure the doors on the hinges, remove the clips or straps attached to the doors, and test out their swinging motion. Fill the cracks between the jamb and frame with insulation. Install the interior casing and exterior molding, and apply caulk along the exterior to seal out drafts. Complete your door replacement by following the manufacturer's finishing instructions.

Home Improvements for Christmas | ArticlesBase.com

Category : Home Improvement

This will mean a considerable amount of money being spent when the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

There are plenty of things that you could spend your money on that will be beneficial to the family such as a home improvement. These come in many different forms from a simple redesign of a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom to a more long term investment of a conservatory or double glazing. The great thing about home improvements is that they can make a nice change to your home as well as adding great value.

There is a range of ways to find the best option for you but before you think about making a home improvement you need to analyse what kind of budget you have. If you only have a small budget then there is little to no point considering building a conservatory as this can be quite expensive to have done. Despite the longer term benefits of having a conservatory it is understandable why people could not afford one so close to Christmas.

The good thing is though that there are other options you can choose that do not cost a lot of money and will still give you the added value to your property you require. Decorating your rooms is also a good and cost effective way of giving your home a spruce up. It wont add much value to your home but you will be surprised at how a splash of colour here and there can change the look and feel of a room.

Especially if it is your living room where you will undoubtedly spend a proportion of your time over the Christmas period whether it is playing games with family and friends are just relaxing after the Christmas dinner in front of the television. You can enjoy the festive period a lot more with a home improvement. You can plan one for after the Christmas rush where there may be some good sales on and if you then consider double glazing in order to keep you home warm and your bills down.

Double glazing is recommended to all homeowners and if you are looking for double glazing quotes then search online and find a fitter in your area.

Pick the Right Modern Sofa for Drama-Free Home Improvement Project | ArticlesBase.com

Category : Furniture

One of the major purchases all of us will probably make at least once it our lifetime is the sofa. This is an important part of any home. Buying it is unlike buying other home accessories. It takes a lot of considerations to get it right and ensure that only the quality piece will be brought back home. And if you're eyeing a modern sofa to suit your urbanite taste, here are some helpful tips to remove the drama away from shopping.

What you need to consider

Like previously mentioned, buying amodern sofa is unlike minor furniture shopping. There are a lot of considerations you need to think about and solve before even heading out to the furniture store. For starters, you have to know the size of sofa you need. This is, of course, relative to the size of the space where you're placing the piece.

The best way to come up with the right scale is to first measure your room and get the precise length and width. This will be greatly helpful in lessening the risk of buying a piece that is either too big to reduce walking space or too small to render the room dull and boring.

Another is style. There are a lot of designs modern sofa is available with. You can choose the functional sofa bed for unexpected sleepovers. You can also opt for an exquisite sectional piece for added aesthetic effect. But if you're limited in space, choose a loveseat and pair it with a couch or two.

Budget is important too

Aside from those mentioned, it is also critically important to set a budget. If you arrive at the furniture store unprepared and without the set price range, you can easily make the mistake of going overboard with the expenses. A great advice would be to window shop online before shopping. You can even save some money if you choose to shop online as well. There are simply plenty of ways to help you curb shopping expenses slightly; all you have to do is to be very mindful of what you use your credit card with.

Test drive

If you opt to purchase the modern sofa on a local furniture store, you can ask the manager of that store if they offer testing of the piece. Many stores allow buyers to take the pieces home to see if it will fit their room and to return it if not. However, you have to understand the terms and regulations involved if they do allow such policy in order to guarantee that youll have the privilege to either get your money back or spend it on an alternative furniture piece.

Remodeling Your Bathroom on a Budget | ArticlesBase.com

Category : Home Improvement

Far too often, we will pay attention to every room in our home but neglect the bathroom. This is unfortunate because remodeling a bathroom can prove to be quite significant in terms of its ability to truly add to the interior décor. Yet, there are those that do not invest the proper amount of effort and energy in order to devise the improvement of the look of the bathroom.

Why is this? There are scores of reasons why and many of them come down to a single word: budget. That is, many people simply do not have the funds needed to properly invest in the proper development of a bathroom. In many ways, this is understandable because some of the steps taken to remodel a bathroom can cost quite a bit of money. However, it is important to point out that while some methods can be expensive this is not true of all methods. In fact, there are many steps one can take to remodel a bathroom on a budget. The following are few of the ways it is possible:

Seek as many estimates as possible from as many different remodeling contractors as you can. You would be amazed at the many deals you may be able to find when you explore the various different deals that are available. I recommend a minimum of 3 bids from 3 different contractors, and most importantly – make sure they know you're getting bids. It's amazing how much they'll drop their price when they know they're competing against other contractors. There is no reason to spend more than you need to spend on a remodeled bathroom and many of the excellent contractors out there will help facilitate this.

Then again, you may not even need to go so far as to hire a contractor to redo the bathroom. Sometimes, even the most minor changes can make tremendous differences in the look of a bathroom. Something as simple as purchasing a new faucet can make a bathroom look completely different. Minor additions and modifications can go a long way and, often, this is the best way to start.

In the same vain, it may be best to merely repaint the walls of the bathroom. A different color can create an amazingly different look. If you are interested in doing the work yourself, all you will need is a few cans of paint and a brush. Well, you will also need to set aside a little bit of time to do the actual painting but you already knew that! In all serious, a paintjob can deliver a great impact on the overall look of the interior.

Remodel the bathroom in bits and pieces. Launching a complete remodeling of the entire bathroom can cost quite a bit. However, doing these things in installments can prove to be much less expensive than an overall complete remodeling venture. So, take things step by step and you will save a great deal of money.

Home Improvement – Painting (on Budget)

Category : Painting

Buying a new property can be a stressful experience. Not only we spend a lot on the property itself but also we have to cover all the additional cost associated with the purchase and move. Estate agents, mortgage brokers, bankers, solicitors, lawyers, moving company employees, all these nice people you meet want to be paid for their work. In the end you are left alone standing in front of your new home with a shiny set of keys in one hand and set of bills to pay in another. If you have done your research properly and have found good moving company, boxes with your precious belongings were carried inside. If not, though. You will have to carry them inside all by yourself.

But lets get to the point. If you want to save on redecorating your new property just do it yourself. It easy. If I've managed to do it, everyone can. You have to devote your time and effort though. If you have friends and family ready to help for pizza or crate of beer the better. It will cut the time necessary for the task.

Here are quick steps:

1. Examine walls and ceilings. Is there a wallpaper or paint? What is their general condition? (surprisingly I came across properties where somebody put wallpaper on ceilings. I'm not saying that is wrong, but if you don't have experience with papering don't even considered doing it. Save yourself a hustle, sore arms, and angry look on your helper's face and paint the ceiling)
2. What would you like to have on these walls? (In this article we will focus of painting.)
3. Buy paint, sandpaper, rollers, brushes, masking tape, and some plaster. Unfortunately there is no way to save on these necessities other than looking for bargains. Always read instructions on paint. If you are unsure it the paint you chose is proper for the task ask in the store just before you buy it.
4. Cover floors. If you're really on budget you can use boxes your belongings arrived or you can buy tarpaulin ground sheet (or similar product).
5. Prepare the surface. Regardless what you want on your walls (and ceiling) that's very important step. Plaster all the wholes and let it dry. Depending on climate leave it for 2 hours to a day to dry. The less plaster you leave on the wall the less work you will have sandpapering the remains off.
Now. If there was a paint it is advisable to sandpaper the surface. It will help new paint to adhere better.
If there is a wallpaper I would advise you to remove it before painting or papering it. In one property I visited I saw 3 layers of wallpaper one on another! And believe me, it doesn't look pretty.
After removing old wallpaper we have a task of cleaning the wall of the old glue. Use dump rags and soap or cleaning liquid.
Unfortunately if you removed old paper and it took off some of the old paint underneath you have a bigger challenge. You have 2 options. Remove all the paint using sandpaper or try to wash of the old paint and glue that was left. That would
depends on the kind of pain that was used there.
6. Using a masking tape cover sockets, bits of door frames.
7. Paint the ceiling first. Once the paint dries use masking tape on the ceiling in the corners preventing ceiling from being painted. Unless you decided to paint the ceiling the same paint as walls.
8. Now the easiest task. Painting. If necessary paint the wall more than once. Remember to wait between each coat. If you do it too soon the paint from previous painting will roll artistically on your roller.
9.When you satisfied with the result, wait for the paint to dry, remove tape from sockets (and ceiling) and its ready for you to move in.

That's easy. Just remember the rule. The better you're prepared the less time it takes for the task.
